Who we are

The ANZ Hernia Society comprises a RACS ratified society of surgeons from Australia and New Zealand who have a special interest in hernia surgery. The aims of the society are to provide an avenue for a range of activities such as advocacy, training, setting standards of care and mentoring in hernia surgery.

Since its inception, ANZ Hernia Society have undertaken a range of activities including collaborating with RACS on a rapid review of mesh safety and the TGA on hernia mesh classification. We are also committed to best practice in hernia surgery and are engaged with The American Hernia Society and MD Epinet looking at quality improvement via standardise hernia registry. The society is actively involved in hernia research. ANZ Hernia Society also champions surgical education by hosting regular journal club and partnering with the AWR community to hold hernia specific meetings.

Aims

  • ANZ Hernia Society aims to foster best practice of hernia management in Australia and New Zealand and achieve the highest standard patient outcomes.
  • Foster a hernia surgical community within this craft group with associations to international hernia societies.
  • Advocacy to surgical societies and regulating bodies on the best practice, management and governance of hernia surgery practice.
  • Advocate for achieving best standard practice for hernia surgery via training particularly at the post-fellowship level.
  • Advise and advocate for ongoing research within New Zealand and Australia as well as collaboration with international hernia projects for scientific advancement.
  • Advocate for monitoring of standards in hernia surgery by supporting surgical systems governance of national and international Hernia Clinical Quality Registries.
  • Support a patient centred approach in hernia surgery with development of education and resources for patients and consumers.
