Research in Hernia Surgery and Abdominal Wall Reconstruction

Hernia operations are some of the oldest and most common operations done by general surgeons both in Australasia and around the world. Hernia surgery and abdominal wall reconstruction is undergoing an evolution in operative technique, abdominal wall procedures and changes in management to improve patient selection, preparation and operative repair and post-operative outcomes. Hernia Surgery is now a dynamic discipline that requires ongoing research and improvement in our surgical knowledge to continue improving outcomes for our patients. Australian Hernia Surgeons have been world leaders in some of these changes and improvements in patient outcomes through innovation and research.

ANZ Hernia Society seeks to build on this rich history to support and co-ordinate research opportunities and develop hernia researchers for surgeons at all levels of training from medical student and pre-vocational trainees to SET-trainees and Fellows. We can connect you with Hernia surgeons in most states who have a variety of research opportunities from short projects to more comprehensive research programmes for Master’s or Higher Degrees.

If you would like to get involved please contact Dr Anita Jacombs via the ANZ Hernia Society secretariat with a brief introduction (name, location, stage of training) and outline any areas of interest and/or research requirement(audit/small project to Masters research projection or research higher degree (Research Masters or PhD). We will link you with Hernia Surgeon(s) to discuss their research and assist you with developing a research programme that meets your interests and requirements.
