Clinical Quality Registries (CQRs) on hernia repair have been established in the USA and Europe supporting positive improvement in patient management.
The ANZ Hernia Society, in conjunction with Data Dissect and RACS, are piloting the first hernia specific CQR for Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand which is anticipated to realise the benefits already seen internationally.
This pilot uses of a Learning Healthcare System (LHS) approach towards creation of a virtual Clinical Quality Registry (vCQR).The registry aims to be a longitudinal prospective data collection of hernia procedures throughout Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. Data regarding the patient’s condition, surgical procedure, mesh implant (if used)and the postoperative care will be obtained by the treating medical, nursing and ancillary staff. There is also a component for self-reporting by participants to collect patient reported outcomes and experiences.
The first site of this pilot study isThe Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH)in South Australia. The aim is to utilise the data to monitor trends in hernia surgery, identify best practices, and inform quality improvement initiatives. The project also intends to determine the feasibility of a bi-national rollout.
